Community: Summer School

Program Contents
 
Pre-School Program
(for children age 2 1/2 to 5+years of age)
 

Half-day: 8:45 - 11:45 a.m. or Full-day: 8:45 a.m.– 3:00 p.m.   Based on the Montessori philosophy, the goal of this program is to help children become aware of themselves and their surroundings by gaining self-confidence and interdependence through individual work as well as group activities.  The program consists of Basic Montessori Activities, Songs and Rhythm Activities, Arts and Crafts and Physical Education. 

 
Note:Non-Saint Maur children are welcome to join our summer program; however, admittance into the summer pre-school program is not a guarantee of acceptance into the regular Montessori School in the fall.
 

FULL DAY
1st Grade Headstart Program
(for children starting grade 1 in fall of 2010)

 

8:45 - 3:00 p.m.: Children in this Full Day Grade One Headstart Program will have classes in Language Arts, Math, IPC, Art and P.E. Reading instruction will focus on phonics, reading fluency and reading comprehension through whole class, small group and individual activities and will include participation in daily writing tasks. Basic addition, subtraction and problem solving skills will be taught in the Math classes. During the IPC, Art and P.E. sessions students will partake in a variety of interesting activities that will extend their knowledge and abilities. Participation in this program will allow children to develop their speaking and listening skills and help prepare them for entry into their regular Grade One class. (Ms. Middleton, Ms. Gauthier)

 

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
(for students starting grades 2-5  in fall of 2010)

 

General P.E.: Students are given an opportunity to develop self-confidence, overall sports skills and coordination through their participation in various activities such as field sports, gymnastics, basketball and other activities.

Computers: Gr. 2/3 students use digital images from a variety of sources, including their own drawings to produce various documents, including a printed storybook. Gr. 4/5 students use materials from a variety of sources to produce several documents including a PowerPoint presentation containing images, text, action buttons, sound, transitions and animations. Priority given to the first 6 students in each grade level applying for the full-day 3-week program. Students need a data stick if they want to keep their materials.

Language Arts: Students improve vocabulary, writing skills, spelling, phonics and reading comprehension. Time is also allocated for storytelling , as well as leisure reading.

Science/Math: Students enjoy science through performing various exciting experiments. Real-life applications of Math skills are incorporated into the course.

Japanese A/B: Non-native speakers of Japanese learn basic, useful phrases, vocabulary, reading/writing of hiragana, katakana and some kanji in the Japanese B class. Native speakers concentrate on reading/writing skills, comprehension, grammar and kanji in the Japanese A class.

Arts&Crafts: A fun-filled class where students create festive arts and crafts working with a variety of materials to produce three-dimensional works of art.

Drama: Students rehearse and perform a short play. Parents and friends are invited to the final performance. Note: Only open to students who register for the full-day 3 week program.

Middle School
(for students starting grades 6-8 in fall of 2010)
 

Grammar, Spelling & Writing Review: Emphasis is placed on reviewing common grammar, spelling and writing errors made by students entering Middle School. (Mr. Castro)

Creative Writing Workshop:
Students learn to use a variety of writing techniques to increase their creativity in all writing forms. These include choosing appropriate words, incorporating experiences of their own lives, and getting ideas from various sources. They write using a combination of pen and paper, as well as technology. (Mr. Wehrle)

Math Challenge & Critical Thinking: (Gr. 6&7) Students develop the range of critical thinking skills needed for success in mathematics as they work on activities with real-life applications. (Mr. Castro)

Math: (Gr. 7&8) The focus of this course will be to improve basic algebra skills relevant to any math topic outside of geometry. (Mr. Matsumoto)

Japanese A: This class, designed for native speakers of Japanese, stresses the importance of effective oral language skills, building vocabulary and kanji study. Group discussions and individual oral presentations are also emphasized. (Ms. Uehara)

Japanese B: Emphasis is placed on oral communication for students who are not native speakers of Japanese. Students will learn to communicate using phrases that will come in handy in every day situations. (Ms. Ii)

Computer:
Students explore and develop ways to use the web for communication, and also investigate software used for manipulating images, digital editing, creating documents, movies, etc. Students need data stick if they want to keep their materials. (Mr. Wehrle)

Drama: Students will rehearse and perform a short play. Parents and friends are invited to the final performance. Students signing up for Drama must attend the full 3 weeks. Note: Sixth graders join 4th & 5th grade students for drama class. (Mr. James)

MS Basketball Clinic:
Boys and girls will enjoy playing basketball while improving their shooting, dribbling, passing and defensive skills and offensive strategies. (Mr. Ringling)

Time Management Skills & Personal Goal Setting: (for Gr.8 to 10 only) This course will introduce students to Paradigm Shift and good time management skills. Students will also learn how to set personal goals and learn how to work towards them. Students will be expected to share personal experiences, work in groups and think independently.

High School
(for students starting grades 9-12 in fall of 2010)
 

IGCSE English: (Gr. 9&10) This course prepares students for IGCSE first Language English/EAL and IGCSE Literature. Course content includes reading, directed writing, oral presentations, prose and drama. (Mr. Wehrle)

TOEFL (G): (Gr. 9-12) This course is designed to help students improve specific grammar skills for the TOEFL written test. (Mr. Ringling, Mr. James)

TOEFL (L/R): (Gr. 9-12) Listening and Reading Comprehension are the focus of this course designed to help students improve their listening and reading scores on the TOEFL paper test. (Mr. Ringling, Mr. Yoshii)
Note: TOEFL (L/R) & TOEFL (G) Book fee: 5,000 yen (same book used for both courses)

HS EAL (ESL): (Gr. 9 - 12) The emphasis is on improving English oral and written communication skills through a variety of activities. (Mr. Castro)

IGCSE MATH:
(Gr. 9 & 10) The focus of this course is to improve on algebra skills contained in the IGCSE curriculum. (Mr. Matsumoto)

Pre-IB Math: (Gr. 11) The focus of this course is to introduce IB math concepts and skills with a focus on the IB SL Math curriculum. (Mr. Matsumoto)

Time Management Skills & Personal Goal Setting: (Gr. 9-10) This course introduces students to Paradigm Shift and good time management skills. Students also learn how to set personal goals and learn how to work towards them. Students are expected to share personal experiences, work in groups and think independently. (Mr. Matsumoto)

Japanese A: (Gr. 9-12) The objective of this course is to deepen the student’s appreciation of literature. Students learn various writing styles through modern and classic novels, essays, newspaper articles, and so on. Students receive their own publications at the end of the course. (Ms. Uehara)

Japanese B: (Gr. 9-12) For absolute beginners and those who have had only limited study of Japanese. Conversation, reading and writing are taught; however, in addition to learning hiragana, katakana and kanji, students learn about Japan and Japanese culture through experiences around them. (Ms. Ii)

Computer: (Gr. 9-12) Students explore and develop ways to use the web for communication, and also investigate software used for manipulating images, digital editing, creating documents, movies, etc. These are all essential parts of the IGCSE and IB Info Tech courses. This course is not a prerequisite for IGCSE or IB Info. Tech. and is open to any interested student. (Mr. Wehrle)

Basketball Clinic: (Gr. 9-12) Boys and girls enjoy basketball while improving their skills. Shooting, dribbling, passing and defensive skills are covered, as well as ample time to play the game. (Mr. Ringling)

Course Selection: All Keio Academy NY students must register for the FIVE courses as specified below:

  1. TOEFL Grammar
  2. TOEFL Listening & Reading
  3. High School ESL (EAL)
  4. High School Computer OR High School Basketball
    (Note: Students ARE allowed to take the HS Basketball course to fulfill Keio Academy NY summer school English requirement)
  5. 16-hour Special EAL Course (July 5 - July 14; Two hours per day for 8 days)
