In 1998, Ben Lecomte swam across the Atlantic Ocean in support of cancer research as a tribute to his father. Despite being followed by a shark for five days, being stung by jellyfish, and being completely exhausted, Ben successfully completed the swim in 73 days. This time, The Longest Swim will be the 1st attempt to swim across the Pacific Ocean. After his daily 8-hour swim, Ben will jump onboard the support sailing yacht “Discoverer” to eat, rest and spend time with the crew. The crew will... Read More

Thanks to an ongoing effort to communicate about its many activities, the Science Department has been generating more and more interest from fellow scientists in Japan and abroad. We were recently contacted by Dr Tucker Gilman, a biologist at the University of Manchester, who kindly offered us to present his work to our students. Dr Gilman and one of his graduate students, Ms Rebecca Lewis, came to our school on Friday 18th of May and gave our Grade 11 IB Biologists a 1-hour presentation of... Read More

Each year in semester 2, the grade six and seven students work in pairs or groups of up to four to design and carry out an investigation of their choice in order to practice and build upon their scientific skills. This year’s cohort presented the results of their investigations to the community, including students from Yokohama Science Frontier High School, on Friday, May 11th. While the students have an opportunity to earn a prize or the quality of their research, the purpose of this... Read More

In October of last year (2017) the Science Department was in panic! The water still for preparing distilled water had broken down irretrievably. In constant use since the original purchase in 2004 it chose the moment before the IB Biology Individual Investigations to stop working. Faced with purchasing large volumes of distilled water at great expense from the chemical supplier or replacing the machine with a new one to supply distilled water more cheaply in-house, the Science Department looked... On Monday 19th of March, a group of 21 IB Biology students from Saint Maur International School led by Ms Novick and Dr Erard visited the Yokohama Campus of RIKEN (Rikagaku Kenkyūsho, 理化学研究所), a multidisciplinary research organization that is engaged in a broad variety of research within natural sciences. Founded in 1917, RIKEN is a principally state-funded (approximately 88 billion Yen annually) institution that conducts research within a number of scientific disciplines ranging from physics... Karen's Report: From the moment I set foot into the YSFH campus, I was in awe of the facility and the number of labs they had. Ayane, who was my guide for the three days warmed me with open arms, and so did everyone else. She told me about the school, and showed me around the campus, explaining what kind of experiments were done at each lab. Seeing people at the same age as me who are also equally interested in science as I am, working diligently in their labs and writing up reports sparked a... Read More

Saint Maur International School welcomed six students from Yokohama Science Frontier high School (YSFH) to take part in the practical phase of the IB Group 4 (Science/IT) project, held at the Saint Maur Science Centre on 20th October 2017. Grade 12 students formed inter-disciplinary Science groups and investigated a topic of their choice on the theme of ‘uncertainty’. Students designed the experimental protocol themselves, set up the apparatus, recorded data and wrote up a short report on their... Read More

Students were also able to share their ideas and learn about the research of other students from Japan, Singapore, and Canada. Following the proceedings, students assisted to a 1-hour presentation by Nobel Prize winner Professor Makoto Kobayashi on Particle Physics. Here is a breakdown of our student's topics: Isaac: An Investigation of Newton's Cradle: The Decay of the Height Displacement of an End Ball with Time (poster) Kiho: An investigation of the relationship between the angle of...
