Cougars Succeed at Scholar's Cup
Where do cougars and alpacas come together in harmony? At the World Scholar’s Cup, of course! On May 5-6, nine middle school students from Saint Maur competed in the Tokyo Round of the World Scholar’s Cup.
The World Scholar’s Cup consists of four different events:
- The Scholar’s Challenge (a multiple choice test)
- Team Debate
- Collaborative Writing
- The Scholar’s Bowl
Only one student from Saint Maur competed in the Senior Division this year, which meant she was an 8th grader mainly competing against high school students. Since the World Scholar’s Cup is a team event, she collaborated with two students from another high school. Despite this, she faced the challenge head on and brought home a gold medal award in Writing.

A 7th grade student earned a trophy for having the second highest overall point total for all four events. The same student was the high scorer in the category “Special Area” for the Scholar’s Challenge. Additionally, one of our 6th grade students earned the top score in the category of Arts and Music. Our team of 7th grade students earned trophies for collaborative writing and the scholar’s challenge and finished in 5th place overall. “I really liked the award ceremony, it was embarrassing, but kind of nice,” said one student.

As another student remarked, “The talent show was very fun!” A trio of students from our school performed in the talent show, and all of our scholars qualified for the upcoming Global Rounds. And, of course, everyone went home with an alpaca.
