English Department

Our students develop a love of the written word while reading a diverse selection of media texts and literary works.

FROM MACBETH TO MAYA ANGELOU

English students at Saint Maur:

  • are encouraged to read widely – to this end, English classes visit the school library each fortnight;
  • become proficient in expressing themselves effectively through writing a variety of texts;
  • learn to articulate their ideas in discussions;
  • develop a range of skills, including analysis, research, and collaboration;
  • get to grips with grammar and develop understanding of the structure of the language.

Each year the English department recognizes two outstanding students. The Golden Pen Award recognizes a High School student for outstanding achievement in English classes and for participation in related activities. The Linguist of the Year award is given to a Middle School student who has taken on English as an additional language, has shown a love for the subject, and has made outstanding progress towards mastery of the language.
