Montessori Students Make Their Own Ice Cream

Montessori Students Make Their Own Ice Cream

Our Pre-School Montessori students have been learning about ice cream these past few weeks. The child-centred learning included crafting decorative ice cream cones, learning a mathematical song about a little girl who wants to have ten scoops of ice cream, colouring and decorating a big welcome sign outside their classroom, and finally, the children made their own ice cream!

As Ms. Almoula's class gathered, the children first learned about the ingredients in ice cream and where each ingredient comes from. Then our youngest students made their own ice cream by freezing and shaking the ingredients in a playful way. The students formed groups and made several batches of vanilla and chocolate ice cream. After carefully following their teachers' instructions, the ice cream was ready to be served!

As a final step, the class investigated the ice cream's consistency and taste. In these engaging themed lessons, our Montessori students learned mathematic skills such as measuring and counting, as well as creative skills and learning about resources and the value of our food. What a perfect lesson at the end of a hot summer in Yokohama!
