Yokohama Science Frontier High School Students Visit Saint Maur International School

Six students from Yokohama Science Frontier High School (YSFH) visited Saint Maur between November 14th – 16th as part of the annual exchange programme. The students followed their Grade 10 and 11 hosts and as well as taking a keen interest in how Science is taught at Saint Maur, participated in the full range of regular classes and activities. The event provided students with the opportunity to find out about the differences between the Japanese education system and life at an International School. Many of the students were surprised by the differences between them.

Medals and Trophies from the Irish Dance Feis in Hong Kong

The Lantau Island Irish Dance Feis (Competition) in Hong Kong took place on October 27th, 2018 with the performance of four Saint Maur students: Gr. 4 Aya, Gr. 7 Rio and Rin, and Gr. 9 Anna. In this competition, approximately 100 dancers from Japan, China-Shanghai, Taiwan and Hong Kong performed. Our students challenged their technique, knowledge and experience in different categories bringing home a number of medals and trophies.

Successful Christmas Bazaar 2018 - Many Thanks From PSG

On Sunday November 18, the Parent Support Group held its annual Christmas Bazaar, our main fundraising event of the year. The weather was in our favour and together with a rich program including stalls, food booths, music, dance, Santa visits, storytelling and games, it attracted a large crowd from our community as well as from the wider public.

11th November Ceremony at the Foreign Cemetery

On Sunday 11th November 2018, the French school students participated in the 100th Anniversary ceremony at the Yokohama Foreign Cemetery to commemorate the end of World War One (1914-1918), also called "The war to end all wars".

Lecture on Genetics and Disease by Dr Vanessa Sancho-Shimizu

The Science Department recently welcomed back one the the Saint Maur graduate from the 1995 class. Dr Vanessa Sancho-Shimizu kindly took on some of her time off visiting relatives in Japan to give a presentation to our Grade 11 Biology students about her work on the study of genetics in order to understand Human health and disease.

Another Dynasty of Runners at Saint Maur?

Runners who have been at Saint Maur for a number of years will be familiar with the name Novick. Brother and sister secured the top position on the Saint Maur Fastest Runners table in 2000 (Ian) and 2007 (Anna). While our coach Anna Novick is still at the top of the female list, Ian’s time was beaten by two seconds in 2017 by Ken Johnson who is now sitting comfortably at the top of the male list. Maybe not so comfortably, since this season saw the arrival of two other Johnsons. Ken’s younger sister Akari (Grade 6) and brother Jun (Grade 8).

IB, AP, and IGCSE Results 2018

The IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations for the tenth graders are held in two sessions every year: October/November and May/June. Each subject is separately graded with each student taking exams in several different subjects. The IGCSE results for the sophomores of 2017/18 were issued mid- August.

Continuing on our effort to bring real world science to the classroom, we received our first guest of the year, Dr Shirley Tamura (MPH, RD, DrPH), a nutritonist who was involved in research for a number of years at Harvard and U.C. Berkeley's Schools of Public Health.

Habitat for Humanity Trip to Cambodia 2018

During this past summer, a group of Grade 10s and 11s and teachers travelled to Cambodia to participate in Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village program. Habitat for Humanity is a global non-profit organization whose vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. As part of the Global Village program, our students helped a family in need rebuild their home.

Passing of Sister Agatha Ahern on June 27, 2018

Sister Agatha Ahern passed away on June 27, 2018, in Ireland. During her many years of service, she contributed greatly to the overall success of Saint Maur International School, and was a well respected and admired member of the teaching staff and Sisters of the Infant Jesus. The following eulogy for Sister Agatha was shared with the community at her memorial service on June 29.
